Job Boards aren’t the Only Answer

by Kevin O'Brien on July 17th, 2010

These days, it’s likely that suppliers are utilizing job boards as the only source. I have spent countless hours evaluating numerous types of IT staffing and consulting firms in and around Chicago. I have met hundreds of recruiters and seen first hand the daily regimen that now is referred to as ‘recruiting’.  The common answer these days is to search the boards.

Well, that is not the only answer. I remember as a recruiter not having to ‘cover’ candidates on requirements because the talent pool that we sourced from wasn’t out in the general public. Obviously, the times have changed with candidates giving themselves visibility across multiple sources. Job boards are a great resource, don’t get me wrong. However, the competition is fierce on the boards and the best candidates are getting inundated by every single recruiter. Additionally, candidates are lying about whether or not they have been submitted to, interviewed with or submitted to positions. In the end, the candidate loses. Of course, all of these issues are for other posts.

Bottom line is that the very best recruiters build a network that gives them the best chance of winning. The job boards are a great resource, but not the only answer…
